Data Protection & People Counting in Retail Window Screens – What Personal Data We Collect

At High Street Media Co., we use digital screens placed in retail windows on high streets to display content and to monitor footfall.
We do not capture, record, or store identifiable images or video of individuals as they pass by our screens.

Our systems are designed to perform anonymous people counting only, which means:

  • No photographs, videos, or visual recordings of individuals are collected.

  • No facial recognition or other biometric processing is performed.

  • The data collected consists solely of aggregate counts of people passing in front of our screens.

We do this for legitimate business purposes, including:

  • Understanding footfall trends.

  • Helping retailers measure and improve customer engagement.

  • Supporting commercial decisions based on anonymised visitor data.

Legal Basis for Processing

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, we rely on the following legal bases for processing the anonymised data described:

  • Legitimate Interests – To provide anonymised people counting services and analytics to our clients to support operational and marketing insights.

Our processing does not involve any personal data that could identify an individual.

No Identification or Tracking

We do not:

  • Identify, track, or profile individuals.

  • Store IP addresses, facial images, biometrics, or device identifiers in connection with people counting.

  • Use cookies or other technologies in the screens themselves to track individual behaviour across sites.

Data Retention

Anonymised footfall data is retained only as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected. This data cannot be linked to any identifiable person and therefore does not constitute personal data under UK GDPR.

Your Rights

Because no personal data is collected or processed in an identifiable form by our people counting system:

  • You do not have rights in relation to this system as a data subject under UK GDPR (for example, the rights to access, rectify, or erase personal data) with respect to the people counting process.

If you have any questions about our use of analytics or our broader privacy practices, please contact us using the details below.
